Tips to Reduce High Water and Sewer Bills
As Nutley transitions to the new Sewer Utility, it's important to understand how you can manage your water usage to keep your bills as low as possible. Here are some practical tips to help reduce water consumption and, in turn, lower sewer bills:
INDOOR WATER USE
- FIX LEAKS PROMPTLY: A dripping faucet or a running toilet can waste a significant amount of water. Fix leaks as soon as you notice them.
- INSTALL WATER-EFFICIENT FIXTURES: Consider replacing old fixtures with water-efficient ones, such as low-flow showerheads, faucets, and toilets. Look for the WaterSense label.
- SHORTEN SHOWERS: Reducing your shower time by a few minutes can save several gallons of water each day.
- TURN OFF TAPS WHEN NOT IN USE: Don’t let water run while brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing dishes. Use only as much water as you need.
- USE FULL LOADS: Run dishwashers and washing machines only when they are full. This practice saves both water and energy.
- UPGRADE APPLIANCES: Consider purchasing energy-efficient and water-saving appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines.
OUTDOOR WATER USE
- WATER WISELY: Water your lawn and garden during the early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation. Aim for deep, infrequent watering rather than daily light watering.
- USE DROUGHT-RESISTANT PLANTS: Opt for native and drought-resistant plants that require less water.
- INSTALL A RAIN BARREL: Collect rainwater for watering your plants. This not only conserves water but also reduces your water bill.
- ADJUST SPRINKLERS: Ensure your sprinklers are watering your lawn and garden, not the pavement or driveway. Use a timer to avoid over-watering.
- MULCH YOUR GARDEN: Mulching helps retain soil moisture and reduces the need for frequent watering.
SWIMMING POOLS AND SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
- COVER YOUR POOL: Use a pool cover to reduce evaporation when the pool is not in use.
- CHECK FOR LEAKS: Regularly inspect your pool and sprinkler systems for leaks and fix them promptly.
- USE EFFICIENT SPRINKLER HEADS: Consider upgrading to water-efficient sprinkler heads that reduce water waste and install a rain sensor to shut off your irrigation system when it rains.
GENERAL TIPS
- MONITOR YOUR WATER USAGE: Regularly check your water meter to monitor your household’s water usage and detect any unusual spikes that may indicate a leak.
- EDUCATE YOUR HOUSEHOLD: Make sure everyone in your household is aware of water-saving practices and the importance of reducing water consumption.
- APPLY FOR CREDITS: If you use significant amounts of water for swimming pools or lawn sprinkler systems, apply for the available credits to reduce your sewer charges.
