Nutley Commissioners Work to Provide Commuter Bus Solution

As a result of efforts from the Nutley Board of Commissioners, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr., and other elected officials, Nutley residents commuting in and out of New York City affected by DeCamp bus lines ceasing Northern New Jersey commuter buses will once again have reliable transportation thanks to NJ Transit.

Beginning April 10, former DeCamp Route 33 riders will utilize the NJ Transit 192-D route during peak weekday hours. The 192-D is an extension of the current 192 route already in place that runs through Nutley with stops on Broad Street, Bloomfield Avenue, West Passaic Avenue and Darling Avenue before heading into Manhattan. The route departs from Port Authority Bus Terminal Gate 208, Door 2.

“The Nutley Board of Commissioners learned on March 20 that DeCamp would be ending commuter bus services, and immediately reached out to NJ Transit to urge them to assist in filling in the gaps for affected residents,” explains Mayor Joseph P. Scarpelli. “NJ Transit  advised us that they were looking into it. In a subsequent meeting with County Executive DiVincenzo, he immediately contacted NJ Transit executives directly. He voiced his concerns and reiterated how important this issue was to residents of Essex County, along with Senator Teresa Ruiz who was also in the conversation. They were a big push in getting NJ Transit to listen to our concerns.”

While NJ Transit was unable to completely take over the entire DeCamp routes, they were able to extend their existing 192 route to accommodate affected Nutley residents. “NJ Transit feels that this interim plan will take care of approximately 85 percent of DeCamp commuters who have been affected,” notes Scarpelli. “The gap that was there for riders of the 33 will be filled with the 192-D.”

“The entire Board of Commissioners was on this issue from the moment we heard our residents would be affected, and we thank the County Executive and Senator Ruiz for their help in working with NJ Transit to create this interim plan,” he adds. “The next step is to provide long-term solutions for all of the DeCamp routes affected by Covid and their discontinuing New York City services, as many of our residents have relied on this easy access in and out of the city.”

DeCamp bus lines announced it would end its commuter bus services April 7, citing an 80-percent drop in commuter bus passengers over pre-COVID levels.

NJ Transit has advised that the service plan will only include weekday peak periods for the four modified bus routes and will not duplicate the current DeCamp routes in their entirety, though the variants will mirror many portions of the current routes. During weekends and off-peak weekdays, customers are advised to utilize existing NJ TRANSIT services. NJ Transit will continually monitor ridership demand, and will be able to make adjustments in June if warranted and as resources allow.
