Post Tropical Depression Debby will bring a period of heavy rain, isolated strong to severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and high surf and dangerous rip currents to the area through tonight.

Rainfall:

  • Storm Total Rainfall: 1 to 2” for most of the area thru early Sat AM. Locally 3” possible
    N&W of NYC. 0.5 to 1” with locally higher amounts across NYC and Long Island.
  • Rainfall Rates: Generally, ½ to 1” / hr, locally hr possible this afternoon into tonight
  • Flash Flood Impacts: Scattered instances of flash flooding of urban & poor drainage areas and along quick responding small rivers and streams possible for NE NJ and Lo Hud this afternoon into tonight. Isolated flash flood threat for remainder of the area.
    Saturated grounds from recent rainfall could exacerbate flood impacts.

Winds:

  • Peak Winds: South winds 20 to 30 mph with gust 35 to 45 mph likely this afternoon into tonight. Gusts to 50 mph possible for LI and NYC this afternoon into this evening.
  • Impacts: Scattered downed trees and tree limbs. Power outages possible.

Isolated to Scattered Severe Thunderstorms:

  • Potential for isolated to scattered severe storms with damaging winds gusts and brief tornadoes, mainly this afternoon into tonight.

Coastal:

  • High Surf (5 to 11 ft) and High Risk of rip currents along ocean beaches likely into Saturday. Beach flooding and scattered areas of dune erosion possible during times of high tide into midday Saturday.

Marine:

  • Gale conditions and 8 to 12 ft waves on the ocean. 3 to 6 ft on Long Island Sound this afternoon into Sat AM.
