Police Director Alphonse Petracco and Chief Thomas Strumolo advisory:
On Thursday 5/30 at approx. 4:30 AM police responded to an incident on Fitting Place where the homeowner heard a loud noise in his yard and confronted a man described as six foot tall, Hispanic wearing dark clothing approx. 25 years of age.. The actor assaulted the homeowner and fled the scene. Police discovered proceeds that the actor dropped from a burglary on Elm Pl. through investigation police determined multiple vehicles on Elm and Wharton Ave were burglarized, and believed to be the same actor or actor(s). Police investigating said it is very common for thieves to try unlocked door handles and steal proceeds left inside vehicle, however one of the victims on Elm discovered their vehicles window had been smashed with a large stone and several bags stolen.
Chief Thomas Strumolo, advises homeowners not to confront suspicious persons and said call police immediately. Emergency response time is within minutes, and police are equipped to deal with confrontational criminals. Also anyone that may have captured the actor on their home surveillance system are urged to contact Nutley Police.
Director Alphonse Petracco said Public Safety has sent numerous advisories, press releases and set up a flashing sign suggesting residents secure their vehicles and remove valuables. He said police are vigorously investigating these incidents and have several promising leads.
Police urge anyone that may see suspicious activity such as vehicles driving slowly, or making numerous passes, parked or occupied vehicles, and suspicious individuals on neighboring properties to notify Police at 973-284-4940 or dial 911 for emergent matters.
