Nutley Update on COVID-19
The Township of Nutley is providing an update to the community on several important matters, including:
- Additional known COVID-19 cases
- Extension on school closures
- Update on Parks and Recreation activities
- Suspension of rent increases
- Stimulus payment information
- And other important updates

New Known Cases
The Township of Nutley announced an additional 13 new known cases related to COVID-19, bringing the Township total known cases to 304 and 23 deaths.
The Board of Commissioners thoughts and prayers go out to all of the deceased and their families. Flags in Nutley and across the state have been lowered to half-staff in honor of all we have lost. No one will be forgotten.
Due to federal privacy regulations, the Township cannot share detailed information on cases and residents should not contact the Nutley Health Department to request patient details.
The Nutley Health Department is working diligently to track any interactions the individuals who tested positive have had with residents, and they will ensure that anyone at risk of exposure is provided with all of the information necessary, including being tested themselves if appropriate.
Schools Closure Update
Governor Murphy announced today that he has extended the closure of all schools through at least Friday, May 15th, 2020. The state will reassess whether to continue the closure at that time. Parks and Recreation
All Parks and Recreation activities are cancelled until at least May 15th. Basketball courts, tennis courts, ball fields, and playgrounds are closed. Parks will remain open for walking and exercising. DeMuro Track is also permitted to remain open at this time.
However, our administration has responded to numerous reports that have been made regarding larger numbers of residents than permitted walking/exercising at DeMuro Track located on Margaret Avenue, despite the signage posted regarding social distancing. In the best interest of our community, if these calls persist we will be forced to close the track indefinitely and ask that residents find alternate places to exercise. Please abide by the rules and help us keep our residents safe. Parks and Recreation Department personnel will be monitoring the area moving forward.
Suspension of Rent Increases
Governor Phil Murphy today announced that the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency has unanimously voted to suspend rent increases at all eligible properties within the Agency’s portfolio, which includes 36,000 rental units across the state. The suspension of rent increases will remain in place until the termination of Executive Order 103.
Homeowners and renters whose ability to pay their mortgage or rent has been impacted by COVID-19 can now seek housing counseling to help prevent possible eviction or foreclosure. These services are available at no cost to the consumer. A full list of participating housing counselors and more details on the program may be found at: www.njhousing.gov/foreclosure
Economic Impact “Stimulus” Payments
The IRS this week launched a new “Get My Payment” online application to let taxpayers check on their Economic Impact Payment date and update direct deposit information.
Get My Payment will show the projected date when a deposit has been scheduled and allows people a chance to provide their bank information. People who did not use direct deposit on their last tax return will be able to input information to receive the payment by direct deposit into their bank account, expediting receipt.

To the Township’s Veterans
Commissioner Rogers, who is a retired Naval Officer, understands that Veterans passing away during this crisis may not get a military funeral and that family members may not hear from a military officer. If this is the case with you or anyone you know, please email Commissioner Rogers at commissionerrogers@nutleynj.org with the family’s contact information. The families deserve a call and Commissioner Rogers will personally reach out.
Department of Public Works
The following DPW events have been cancelled due to the pandemic:
- Compost Day - April 18th
- Spring Farmer's Market - April 19th
- Electronic Recycling Day - April 25th
Parking meter enforcement is suspended until further notice. Please support our local businesses!
