Message from Commissioner Scarpelli

Dear Resident,

As I complete my 16th year as the Director of Public Works, I want to personally thank you for continuing to make our recycling program such a huge success.  I am constantly working to see how we can reduce expenses without affecting services.

Over the years we made many cost-saving modifications to the recycling program to adapt to the changes in the industry. Outsourcing one-half of our recycling pick up to reduce manpower and increase production, investing in more efficient equipment, and introducing programs and entertaining educational presentations in our schools to increase awareness are some of the changes DPW has instituted in the past. As the recycling market continues to evolve, so will the DPW.

Our community events such as Shredding Day, Compost Day, and our Leaf Bag/Food Drive Day have proven not only popular with our residents, but have been emulated across the state. Take note of the dates located in our Community Event section. Thank you again for your cooperation!

Commissioner Dr. Joseph P. Scarpelli
Director of Public Works

Recycle Coach - Free Smart Phone App

NEW APP FOR 2024 - Recycle Coach

Do you sometimes forget to put out the trash or recycling? Or perhaps you have that large item that needs to go out for bulky waste collection, but you have no idea when that may be? Nutley has an app for that!

The Township of Nutley has collaborated with Recycle Coach to offer residents a valuable resource for understanding the proper disposal methods for different types of household waste they generate.

Additionally, the app allows users to access waste collection schedules and set reminders for pick-up times.

This user-friendly tool, available for free on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, aims to enhance residents' waste management experience.

Recycling Collection Guide and Calendar of Recycling Events

The Recycling Collection guide includes the complete listing of acceptable and unacceptable recycling material and how it is collected by the Township of Nutley.

Recycling Bins

Recycling Bins are available free-of-charge (limit one round, one rectangular & one vegetative waste bin per household) at the Department of Public Works, weekdays from 8:30am to 3:00pm. Proper Identification is required!

Grasscycling - "Cut It and Leave It"

Grasscycling is the natural recycling of grass by leaving clippings on the lawn when mowing. Grass clippings decompose quickly, returning valuable nutrients back into the soil. Grass clippings are a major part of New Jersey’s municipal solid waste stream. As a Nutley resident, you are already helping to avoid air pollution and wasted resources by recycling. You can do more by reducing waste at the source. Leave the grass clippings on your lawn when you mow, and let nature do the recycling.
